Gordon Swan - President

Gordon Swan is the current President of the BCSTA and a school trustee with the SD58 (Nicola-Similkameen) Board of Education. Prior to joining the BCSTA Board of Directors, Gordon served as a BCSTA Provincial Councillor for over a decade and also provided many years of dedicated service to the BC Public School Employers’ Association board. During his term as BCPSEA’s Vice-Chair, the board achieved its first negotiated collective agreement with the BC Teachers’ Federation. The moment stands as a testament to  Gordon’s results focused leadership style. In response to being elected President of the BCSTA in 2017, he made the following statement. 

“I’d like to thank my colleagues for the trust they’ve placed in me and the Board of Directors. BCSTA is bigger than the sum of our parts – our strength is in our diversity, and we look forward to representing our local communities and addressing the particular needs of students across the province.”

Stephanie Higginson - Vice-President

Stephanie Higginson is a trustee in SD68 (Nanaimo/Ladysmith) where she is Vice Chairperson of the Board and Chair of the Education Committee. Stephanie is excited to bring her love for public education and advocacy to the BCSTA Board of Directors as vice-president. Stephanie is a former high school teacher and educational researcher with an MA in Educational Studies. Her areas of interest in education are vast and broad. They include but are not limited to issues of equity in education, collaborative inquiry in teacher professional development, issues surrounding rural education in BC and nature based education.

Stephanie and her family live outside of Nanaimo where they operate a small farm and maple syrup production business. Stephanie’s passion for public education is deeply personal as she is mom to two young school aged boys who are just beginning their educational journey in BC’s public schools.

Teresa Rezansoff - Past-President

Teresa Rezansoff is the BCSTA immediate Past-President and has served on the BCSTA Board of Directors for the past thirteen years, four of those years as President, and two as Vice-President. She is also in her second three year term as an appointee to the BC Teacher’s Council, representing BCSTA.  

As Chair of the SD51 (Boundary) Board of Education, she was first elected as trustee in 1999 and is a proud resident of Grand Forks, BC. A mother to four adult children, all successful graduates of BC’s public education system, Teresa knows firsthand the critical connection between a robust and healthy public education system and the future success of our children and BC.

As a leader, Teresa believes in the power of respectful dialogue and engagement.

Carolyn Broady - Director

Carolyn Broady is a second term trustee and current chair of the SD45 (West Vancouver) Board of Education. She has represented her board as a BCPSEA representative and provincial councillor, and has served on a number of BCSTA committees including the Professional Learning Committee (chair) and Legislative Committee.

A mother of two teenaged children, Carolyn is passionate about public education and believes that we need to continue to work to ensure that every student in our K-12 system gets the support and individualized attention they need to reach their full potential.

Alan Chell - Director

Alan Chell is a trustee from SD19 (Revelstoke). He is an honorary life member of BCSTA and has a great deal of respect for the positive advocacy work of the Association.

Alan was previously on the BCPSEA Board for a number of years and is currently in his 32nd year as a trustee in Revelstoke. Alan is currently Vice Chair of the PEBT and Chair of the Revelstoke Credit Union.

Alan and his wife Linda enjoy their blended family of four adult children and spend a lot of their time with their five grandchildren.

Gloria Jackson - Director

Gloria Jackson is a fourth term elected trustee for SD28 (Quesnel), and presently her board’s Chair. She is a First Nations status member of the Lhtako Dene Nation in Quesnel. As a mother and grandmother, she is truly invested in public education. This is her second year as a director and she has seen firsthand the hard work and dedication that all trustees and districts do across this province for all students. It has been rewarding to be part of the BCSTA Aboriginal Education Committee, the K-12 Aboriginal Education Partner’s table and be a liaison with the North West and South Coast Branches. She is looking forward to representing trustee’s once again.

Donna Sargent - Director

Donna has been a trustee with the SD38 (Richmond) for fifteen years and she is pleased to join the BCSTA Board of Directors for a fourth term. Donna is a strong believer in democratically-elected Boards of Education who are accountable to their community and who bring the voice of the community to the table. She believes public education is the key to everything.

Donna has been the co-chair of the BCSTA Election Engagement Committee, BCSTA Aboriginal Committee Board Liaison and an ELL Consortium member. She has been School Distirct 38 Chair, Vice Chair and has served on many committees. She is actively involved with the Metro Branch. 

Mike Roberts - CEO

Mike Roberts is BCSTA’s Chief Executive Officer. As CEO, Mike is responsible to the BCSTA Board of Directors for the overall staff operations of the organization. He provides direct support to BCSTA's President as well as Boards of Education. Mike has more than thirty years of experience in the education sector and has an extensive background in teaching, administration, labour relations and all levels of government including local school district, employers’ association and Ministry of Education work.
